Research content

Because OH radicals produced by ozone decomposition in water are one of the strongest oxidizers, ozone water can be used in a wide range of applications. Direct water electrolysis systems enable the realization of a compact apparatus and low-voltage operation for ozone water production. We have succeeded in solving the problems concerning the safety, efficiency, and lifetime of a water electrolysis system. As a result, a current efficiency of 29 % and a power efficiency of 76 kWh/kg-O3 were achieved, and the lifetime of the system was estimated to be 5800 Ah. This lifetime corresponds to 2900 h of operation at 0.25 A/cm2, and 6 mg-O3/L ozone water can be produced in an 8-h operation for 365 days without changing the anode.
