Objectives for educational research
The division of engineering research sets an objective for educational research as to cultivate technicians and researchers who are creative and develop high-level research to contribute to society and human beings, also possesses deep knowledge, application skills that is related to principles/rules of each major fields and have judging skills through interdisciplinary approaches.
Based on the above mentioned objective, in master's programs, we cultivate professional engineers and researchers with firm professional education..
In Doctor's programs, we cultivate advanced professional technicians and researchers who can cut through advanced research area.
In accordance with the increase in pursuers of higher education, the meaning of study in university has been getting diversified.
Under such a situation, it is necessary for university to possess own principles and objectives and developing with diversification and inviduation.
Therefore, graduate school (master's programs and doctor's program), where university graduates study further in major field with concentrating on researches, is also required to reflect the current situation and get more upgraded and diversified.
On the other hand, the ways to live life as an individual is also questioned in modern society. In view of achieving higher level as an individual, it's also necessary for graduate school to be upgraded and renovated.
Conventionally, graduate school is divided into master's program (first semester of doctor's program) where students are trained to be generalists possessing advanced knowledge, and doctor's program (second semester) where students are trained to be specialists for education/research. Our graduate school has been working on well-equipped facilities and making an effort to achieve educational objectives.
Based on the knowledge acquired through intensive education in undergraduate study, the majority of the graduates from engineering department has been hoping to enter graduate school with aiming at participating in advanced research and to get a passport to be a part of research department who work actively in the society.
In this remarkably fast developed and knowledge-based society, an individual who works for technology department needs to acquire advanced knowledge while re-building own knowledge system at the most up-to-date level, and develop problem-solving skills/leadership. Graduate school has been highlighted as a stage for students to discover possibilities to heighten own knowledge and also own quality.
As such, the society expects master's degree holders to be independent and leading technicians/researchers, possessing deep knowledge in respective major field and application skills.
In view of this situation, we, the division of engineering research of graduate school in Kogakuin University sets the objectives for education and research as mentioned above.
The division of engineering research of graduate school in Kogakuin University established Master's program in April 1964 and Doctor 's program in April 1966.
These programs are based on the education acquired in undergraduate courses and the objective is to teach/research theory and application in engineering.
In accordance with the revision of graduate school rules in April 1977, the two programs were combined into Doctor's program.
However, the 5 years' Doctor's program is divided into 2 years' first semester course and 3 years' second semester course. The former is called as Master's program and the latter is called as Doctor's second semester program.
The research division has 5 majors as a base which are department of engineering, global engineering and multiple divisions in informatics. The education/research has been conducted by versatile professors who covers extensive areas in respective major field.
The education of our graduate school consists of credits system by class subjects (for master's degree only) and guidance for preparing thesis.
The class subjects in master's curriculum are separated into major subjects (compulsory) and other subjects (optional). The major subjects can be completed by lectures (2 credits) and seminars (8credits) as a set.
Upon enrollment, students are required to choose major subjects and the professor in charge of the selected major subject becomes their teaching advisor.
We have been practicing multi-teaching system since year 2007 which strongly supports students to learn more effectively.
Requirements for completion and degree
To complete master's program, you are required to be registered in the master's program for more than two years, to obtain more than 30 credits in designated course, to receive necessary research guidance, and to pass judging of thesis and final examination.
Those who accomplished excellent research results may be acknowledged to complete the program after 1year.
Upon the completion of the master's program, master's degree in engineering, is conferred. If your major is informatics, you can choose either, master's degree in engineering or master's degree in informatics.
Doctor's program (second semester)
To complete doctor's course, you are required to be registered in the doctor's course for more than three years, to receive necessary research guidance, and to pass judging of thesis and final examination.
Those who accomplished excellent research results may be acknowledged to complete the course after 1 year.
Upon the completion of the doctor's program, Doctor's degree in Engineering, is conferred. If your major is informatics, you can choose either, doctor's degree in engineering or doctor's degree in informatics.
Versatile professors and dedicated detailed guidance
Our graduate school consists of 5 majors which are based on 13 divisions in department of engineering, global engineering and informatics.
The compulsory field in respective major is taught by versatile and experienced professors and advanced education is performed through courses.
Moreover, with introducing multi-teaching system, we carry out more detailed and dedicated guidance in learning and research aspects.
A rich range of research facilities
In view of the essence of technology, the development of advanced highly skilled technicians will not be fulfilled without research education.
Our professors work with students on various research activities day and night, and our research laboratory has 3 affiliated centers which are equipped with research facilities, such as advanced measuring device/apparatus that is required for up-to-date research.
As the continuation of `Advanced Material Center ' (AMC), which was the first center ever selected in our university by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for `High-tic research center renovation project', Nino Surface Interface Center (NASIC) opened in year 2005 and closed in year 2009.
In year 2001, our research project was also selected as `Academic frontier promotion project' by the same minister and following with that the base for research, `Earthquake disaster prevention/Environment research center' (EEC) was completed. Now the center is continuously working actively as Post EEC.
We are also planning to apply for `Strategic Project to Support the Formation of Research Bases' which is integration of `High-tic research center' and `Academic frontier promotion project'.
In addition to that, as the third research center to develop micro engineering with focusing on bio research, `Smart Machine and Micro-Bio System Research Center' (SMBC) was established in year 2004 with the support of `High-tic research center renovation project' by the ministry and which is closed with excellent results in year 2007.
Following the success of SMBC, we planned ` Center of biomedical sciences and engineering research' which strengthen the aspects of bio-related research and applied for `Strategic Project to Support the Formation of Research Bases' , organized by the minister, and successfully selected.
These research activities conducted in the research center are carried out in a big scale which include joint research with external institutes.
By participating in the advanced research, the students of graduate school will grow up as researcher in the large-scale research environment which they can't experience in the laboratory.
Support of research activities for graduate school students.
An increasing number of graduate school students present their research at recent academic meeting.
To encourage students' research presentation, we extend exceptionally substantial support.
When students attend an international academic meeting held in overseas for their research presentation, we assist transportation expenses up to 120thousand yen (return airfare for economy class) for each student.
Even the presentation is held in domestic, we support the transportation expenses, registration fees, and accommodation fees.
Every year, this support assists many students to conduct research presentation.
Moreover, when student contributes a research thesis and which is successfully published in academic journal, we award excellent thesis prize and supplementary prize to encourage his/her continuous research activity.
Low tuition fees and TA system,
A system to encourage entering graduate school with reduction of tuition fees.
Our graduate school hasn't raised the tuition fees for the last 22 years and which is rather low comparing to other universities. We have been continuing our efforts to offer more opportunities to study in graduate school for students having great interest in learning.
We also introduce TA (Teaching assistant) system which offers opportunity to work as a educational staff for graduate school students, which lessen students' financial burden and also provides opportunities to reflect the effects of education.
Moreover, we provide half deduction in tuition fees for the students with excellent results to encourage enrollment in graduate school.
We welcome variety of students and open to society.
Our graduate school has been making an effort to accept a variety of students from extensive fields.
We welcome not only our degree holders, also students from other universities, working adult and overseas students.
Grade skipping enrollment system for excellent students and short-term courses system are also available.
Apart from general entrance examination, we carry out special selection for the enrollment of working adults. Our educational system makes it possible to continue working while studying at graduate school.
Specifically, we have day and night courses system (master's program) in which classes are conducted either daytime or nighttime that alternate every two years and also have semester system which enrollment period is twice a year, in April and October.
Even the number of students who choose to re-enroll as working adults, a while after their graduation is increasing recently.
