A new research laboratory set up in April 2011. Aiming for a holistic approach to landscape design not only from the fields of architecture and urban planning, but also related surrounding fields such as agriculture and the arts. The work from research and analysis to planning, design, and management is dealt with as one sequence.

1. Regional environmental planning based on a site-specific understanding of the natural characteristics.
   By using thematic maps to research the natural environment such as the topography, geology, soil and vegetation, by analyzing the changes through maps and pictures from the past, we can understand the unique character of a site. Research is carried out on problem solving, suggestions, and design for the environmental plan in reply to the challenges that each site may have.

2. Research on landscape design to realize coexistence between human activities and the natural environment.
   Carry out research on landscape design that is sympathetic to the coexistence between human activities and the natural environment in public spaces like parks and green areas. For example, aiming for a design that optimizes conservation, protection and practical uses, taking into account the site-specific history of disturbance and state of recovery based on the idea of vegetation succession.

   • The University Green in the University of Tokyo, Kashiwa Campus.
3. Research on landscape management in terms of a hierarchical spatio-temporal scale.
   In response to various problems involved with the landscape, propose more effective and efficient solutions, by systematically categorizing and organizing the object, bearing in mind the spatial and time scales of any phenomena that may occur. For example, working on a river space that often has natural disturbances, to try to come up with harmonious management for the protection of flood dependent plants, the safety of the park users and local residents, boosting of park use, as well as agricultural production.

4. Research on ecological town planning and management.
   Through the research described above, examine comprehensive town planning and development. Together with the local residents, seek a way to achieve ecological town planning that is not only about the circulation of materials and energy, but also deeply related to the land.

Members of the seminar are expected to be able to act on their own initiative, be capable of versatile research and observation, as well as to positively get involved in local communities and society.
